  • Language of Living 2014 National Tour

Invercargill    |    Christchurch    |    Nelson    |    New Plymouth    |    Tauranga

“The New Zealand Dance Company’s inaugural national tour is a triumph for all concerned” – Ann Hunt, The Dominion Post

Fresh from their acclaimed performances at the Holland Dance Festival, The New Zealand Dance Company embarked on a nationwide tour bringing their innovative choreography and stunning design to five corners of the country. This 2014 National Tour presented the critically acclaimed Language of Living, not only to new North Island centres, but also across Cook Strait to the South Island.

In a five centre, one month, one night only tour, New Zealanders enjoyed the brave and beautiful works on this programme performed by some of the country’s finest artistic athletes and experienced the work of five innovative New Zealand choreographers, together in an evening of cutting edge creativity.

Sarah Foster-Sproull’s Human Human God is a poignant and comical piece about Generation Y by a Generation X-er, while Release Your Robot is Justin Haiu’s street dance inspired work about a robot who seeks higher truth. Arts Laureate Michael Parmenter’s duet Tenerezza plays on the notion that no movement occurs without initiation by the other, while Trees, Birds then People by Artistic Director Shona McCullagh draws on the territorial nature of NZ birds and people for inspiration, and with a poem by Shel Silverstein in mind, Tupua Tigafua‘s new piece Dreamy McFloat, marked the company dancer’s choreographic debut with The New Zealand Dance Company.

The company’s vision for creative alchemy was brought to life by a visual feast of stunning costume, video and set design as well as an exquisite sound experience featuring compositions by CPE Bach, The Electric Boutique, Gareth Farr, Eden Mullholland, Antonio Vivaldi and Sekai Mailata.

“…stylish, sophisticated and of a high calibre.” – Ann Hunt, The Dominion Post

  • Programme

    Michael Parmenter: Tenerezza

Respected dance authority Michael Parmenter’s duet Tenerezza was devised by a method known as ‘Piloting’, where no movement occurs without initiation by the other. Beautifully danced by Carl Tolentino and Justin Haiu, Tenezzera features music by CPE Bach.

“One year on, the Language of Living has settled into its splendidness. …the works themselves pop with new depths of beauty and style.” – Bernadette Rae, NZ Herald

    Justin Haiu: Release your Robot

Choreographed and danced by Justin Haiu and inspired by street dance movement known as robot and liquiding, Release Your Robot features an original score by South Auckland trio The Electric Boutique.

“strong, fierce, competent dancing.” – Jillian Davey, Theatreview

Shona McCullagh: Trees, Birds then People

Set to fellow Arts Laureate Gareth Farr’s work Mondo Rondo, this work is inspired by New Zealand’s unique bird life and explores shifting hierarchy in relationships.

“Shona McCullagh’s vision of bringing New Zealand’s talent out for all to see is to be applauded.” – Francesca Horsley, DANZ

    Sarah Foster-Sproull: Human Human God

A poignant and comical piece about Generation Y by a Generation X-er, this features an original music score by Motocade’s Eden Mulholland. The work focuses on the idea that Generation Y place their notions of God within themselves.

“a satisfying fusion of elements that currently define the art-form in Aotearoa.” – Jenny Stevenson, Theatreview

    Tupua Tigafua: Dreamy McFloat

A special highlight of this tour is the debut of a brand new piece devised by the creative vision of emerging choreographer Tupua Tigafua. Inspired by a Shel Silverstein poem, Dreamy McFloat is his first choreography for The New Zealand Dance Company.
