  • Language of Living 2013 North Island Tour

    25 May to 12 June
    Auckland    |    Warkworth    |    Whangarei    |    Orewa    |    Hawke's Bay    |    Wellington

“A platinum performance, sophisticated, innovative, polished and professional, and with cutting edge creativity.” – The New Zealand Herald

“A new force in contemporary dance.” – National Business Review

Join The New Zealand Dance Company as it embarks on its first North Island tour with its acclaimed inaugural production Language of Living.

The brave and beautiful works on the programme showcase some of New Zealand’s finest artistic athletes in innovative and relevant choreography.

Sarah Foster-Sproull’s Human Human God is a poignant and comical piece about Generation Y by a Generation X-er, while Release Your Robot is Justin Haiu’s street dance inspired work about a robot who seeks higher truth. Arts Laureate Michael Parmenter’s duet Tenerezza plays on the notion that no movement occurs without initiation by the other, while Trees, Birds then People by Artistic Director Shona McCullagh draws on the territorial nature of NZ birds and people for inspiration.

Auckland and Wellington audiences will also be treated to the New Zealand premiere of NZDC’s first international work, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Mark Lorimer’s Faune, inspired by Nijinsky’s original choreography. The work is performed by NZ’s global dance star, Ursula Robb.

The company’s vision for creative alchemy is brought to life by a visual feast of stunning costume, video and set design and an exquisite sound experience featuring compositions by Gareth Farr, Bach, The Electric Boutique and Eden Mullholland.

NZTrio, David Guerin and The Electric Boutique join the stage for selected works in Auckland, with NZTrio performing live with the company in Wellington.

Shona McCullagh: Trees, Birds then People
Set to fellow Arts Laureate Gareth Farr’s work Mondo Rondo this work is inspired by New Zealand’s unique bird life and explores shifting hierarchy in relationships. The score is performed live by the exquisite NZTrio in Auckland and Wellington.

    Sarah Foster-Sproull: Human Human God
A poignant and comical piece about Generation Y by a Generation X-er features an original music score by Motocade’s Eden Mulholland. The work focuses on the idea that Generation Y place their notions of God within themselves.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Mark Lorimer: Faune – Auckland and Wellington performances only
Set to the famous “L’après-midi d’un Faune” (The Afternoon of a Faun) score by Claude Debussy, Faune is respected Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and dancer Mark Lorimer’s work inspired by Vaslav Nijinsky’s original 1912 choreography.
