A top dance school will get a new spring in its step when it opens its doors to young dancers.

The New Zealand Dance Company will be accepting students aged 11 years old and over who are passionate about contemporary dance.

The Youth Engagement Programme will run an autumn school holiday programme with a focus on living a week in the life of a company dancer.

Tutors will be dancers from the company, and will include Tupua Tigafua, Eddie Elliott and artistic director Shona McCullagh.

The programme will cover classes in contemporary, fusion, ballet, muscle and bone, yoga and swing dancing.

The classes will then culminate in a performance at the end of the week.

Based in Waitakere, dancer Kimberly Halberg is joining the programme after taking part in their summer school course.

She says the company has inspired her to become a professional dancer.

‘‘We did five full days of contemporary dance, which I really enjoyed.

‘‘It helped me to understand my love for contemporary dance.’’
