Square had his first taste of working in the performing arts in 1999 in his hometown of Kuala Lumpur and has since then gained experience at various levels with a diverse range of for-profit and not-for-profit organisations, in Malaysia, Wales and New Zealand. Along the way, he has also worked as a producer and occasional director for theatre and film, a lighting designer/operator, as well as a web developer and graphic designer. He is passionate about creating opportunities for arts practitioners and balancing creative expression and commercial sense to deliver quality arts enterprises.

Square was most recently the New Zealand Company Secretary for a Top-25 ASX-listed Trans-Tasman banking, insurance and financial services group, and previous to that, served as Company Secretary/Trust Secretary for Sir James Wallace’s agribusiness Wallace Corporation Ltd and philanthropic arts organisation, The James Wallace Arts Trust. In those roles, he gained wide-ranging technical, governance and commercial skills, working closely with diverse boards of directors, trustees and senior management in New Zealand and Australia.

Square currently volunteers as Founding Trustee & General Manager of The Oryza Foundation for Asian Performing Arts, Trustee of the Asia New Zealand Film Foundation Trust and Steering Committee Member of the Auckland Performing Arts Forum (APAF). He also holds executive directorships in various private enterprises.

Square is an alumni of Cardiff University (LL.B (Hons)), University of Auckland (Grad Dip (Theatre & Film)), Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design (MA Arts Management (Hons)), Chartered Secretaries New Zealand (ACIS) and Creative New Zealand’s Arts Leadership Programme (2007-2010). Excerpts of his Masters thesis, Investigating effective governance in the New Zealand arts sector: Do experienced board members in the business sector make great board members for the arts sector?, have been published in the NZLawyer (Issue 179, March 2012 & Issue 189, July 2012) and the Journal of Chartered Secretaries Australia Ltd (Vol. 64 No. 5, June 2012).

Square has been a founding partner of The New Zealand Dance Company since 2011 as Web Developer & Tech Adviser, and is proud to have served as NZDC’s Acting General Manager from July 2012 to January 2013, leading and supporting the NZDC Team on its journey to achieve equilibrium between commercialism, community and the arts.
