    Show Overview

Be at the intersection of contemporary light, sound and movement. Lumina is The New Zealand Dance Company’s third season of new works, spearheaded by three dynamic artistic teams. Lumina, includes a co-production with the prestigious Holland Dance Festival.

Louise Potiki Bryant (winner of the Harriet Friedlander Residency 2014) and composer/AV designer Paddy Free (Pitch Black) create a thoughtful work, In Transit, which is a vivid reflection of the traces left behind in the Māori ritual of encounter.

Malia Johnston’s (2013 Creative New Zealand Choreographic Fellowship, Stage Director and Principal Choreographer for World of Wearable Art Awards 2002-2014) new work, Brouhaha, devised with her long standing creative partners composer Eden Mulholland and AV designer Rowan Pierce creates a bold, loud and rich world in which dancers are explorers of colour, and artful unravelers of rawness and refined beauty.

The company’s first international commission in co-production with the Holland Dance Festival for Dutch/American choreographer Stephen Shropshire will create The Geography of an Archipelago in collaboration with composer and Phoenix Foundation drummer Chris O’Connor. Featuring a trio of dancers as three different versions of the truth searching for destiny, this work explores the emotions that accompany exile and belonging.

The New Zealand Dance Company is reframing the stage. Be there with us.

The New Zealand Dance Company premiered Lumina at the Maidment Theatre in Auckland, 19-22 August 2015.
