Katie Rudd

Katie grew up in New Plymouth, with her dance training beginning at the Lynn Gilbert-Smith Dance Studio, where she also taught ballet as a student teacher. In 2009 and 2010 she was the winner of the National Young Performer of the Year Award, becoming the first dancer to win this award in both disciplines, and was a Junior Associate of the New Zealand School of Dance.

Katie commenced her formal training at NZSD in 2011, and graduated as a contemporary major in 2013. During her studies worked with a number of guest tutors and choreographers and enjoyed performing in the World of Wearable Arts Awards, The Body Festival and Tempo.  As part of NZSD’s Choreographic Season Katie choreographed her first short work titled Mark, which included a musical collaboration with vocal looper Flo Wilson.

Katie made her professional debut with The New Zealand Dance Company in 2014 in Rotunda at the Holland Dance Festival, followed by a national tour of Language of Living. Katie also performed in New Caledonia at Festival du Mont Dore in a new creation by Thierry Bain in collaboration with Compagnie MAADO.

Katie enjoys opening students eyes up to new ways of moving and watching the dancers gain confidence as they learn.

Chris Ofanoa

Chris watched Michael Jackson dance on TV and started doing the moves at home.  At 13 his Mum took him to an audition for Triple 8 Funk and he got in!  He’s been dancing ever since.  Joining Hip Hop Crew West Auckland saw him competing overseas in Battlegrounds.  The same crew performed at Easter Camp and New Zealand’s Got Talent.

Chris’s introduction to contemporary dance was through the Urban Youth Movement under Black Grace in 2010 and 2011.  He completed a Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts at Unitec and worked with multiple choreographers while there, such as Michael Parmenter, Katie. Burton, Malia Johnston and Moss Patterson.

Chris works full time with The New Zealand Dance Company. For the moment he aims to become the best dancer that he can be and, in the future, plans to explore his own ideas and concepts through choreography.

Chris really enjoys sharing his ‘fusion’ and seeing a puzzle or a riddle unlock when students dance and get it for themselves.  And by the way he’s a Kendama whizz!
